She has an amazing new book out and I hope you will enjoy getting to know some of her characters a much as I did.

GLADIATOR – INTERVIEW WITH CHARACTERS



First of all, I want to thank Leanne for inviting me to share her amazing blog! What an honor it is to be here!

Today we are joined by two extraordinary people. The lovely Phaedra and a man who needs little introduction: Thane, The Gladiator Prince. Welcome!



P: Thank you. It’s very nice to be here.

T: It is an honor.



Q: So Phaedra, let’s start with you. Tell us a bit about yourself.
P: I was raised in Rome and then came to Roman Britannia when my father moved his Ludi after our tour of the providences. I married a few years later, but my husband died, so my father forced me and my younger brother to come back to Britannia. We did not want to.



Q: Why is that?

P: (after a pause) We had spent our whole lives trying to get away from him, afraid he would discover our secret. It was worth our lives.



Q: Sounds intriguing. So what was this secret?

P: (with head down) Forgive me, I should not have mentioned it. It was very rude of me.



Q: In other words, you’re not going to share it.

P: One day, perhaps, but not today.



Q: Alright. We’ll move on. You told me earlier that a Ludi is a group of gladiators who train and fight together. You and your brother traveled the world with these men.

P: Yes.

Q: What about you, Thane? Most of us know of your prowess in the arena… I mean you’re a legend, of course. But what about before then?

T: I am the last surviving royal of the Britannia Trinovantes tribe, the son of a long dead king. My family was destroyed in the Boudicia revolts, either killed in battle or slaughtered like animals in the aftermath. I allowed myself to be captured to save my two daughters. I train and teach in the Ludis.

Q: Right, your daughters. They were taken in a slaver’s raid, is that right?

T: Yes. Due respect, but I do not wish to discuss my children in such a public domain.



Q: I understand. So, Phaedra, I hear you have lived your whole life around gladiators. What was that like?

P: Well, it is hard to live in an all-male world, as you can imagine. I had only my Greek nurse as company, and what few slaves father allowed me. My brother Bahar and I were very close, of course, and he trained with Thane most everyday. I would watch them from time to time. Of course as I got older it became even more fascinating. (Blushing)



Q: I see. When you saw Thane, was it love at first sight?

P: By the gods, no… are you joking? I could not stand him! I thought he was a lummox and a dolt, a mule, and a grouse, and…

T: (Darkly) I am certain she comprehends your meaning.

P: Oh, sorry. I later changed my mind… well, most of it.



Q: So what about you, Thane? I hear you did not lack for women… in fact some of the finest women in Roman Britannia shared your bed, isn’t that right.



T: (mumbled) Fewer than people think…

Q: Wasn’t it one of your escapades that brought you two together?

P & T: Yes/No!



Q: Well, which is it?

T: She was spying on me!

P: I wasn’t spying… not exactly…



Q: Then what were you doing?

(Long pause) P: I was trying… I thought I might be able to learn something about… That is…

T: (Blurting) She wanted to see how I handled a woman sexually, so she hid on the roof over the garden and spied on me.



Q: Oh, my! But you caught her?

P: He threw something at me!

T: She was spying on me!



Q: Then what happened?



(Both blushing)



T: I wanted to teach her a lesson, so I knocked her off the roof and she fell into my arms…

P: He kissed me!

T: I had just had sex with a beautiful woman… You cannot expect me to have control so soon after my rod…

P: Thane!

T: Oh… Anyway, I set her down and started to seduce her.

P: (with a huff) Started is right…



Q: Did she run away?

T: (snort) Hardly. (Smiling and wrapping his arm around her waist) Lustiest little vixen I’ve ever met. I could barely contain myself!

Q: But you did…

T: (adjusting the tunic over his lap) Just…



Q: (Blushing) Well. Perhaps we should move on,,, So you two took off to find your daughters in Rome. I hear you had a rival for Phaedra’s affection.

T: Hasani? He thought he was a rival. The pirate was charming, I’ll give him that…

P: (Blushing) Yes, and handsome… cleaver, funny, smart, a snappy dresser…

T: Domineering, deceptive, unstable, untrustworthy, a thief…



Q: Alright! But you chose Thane, even though he was a gladiator, a slave in your culture.

P: (Taking his arm and kissing his cheek) Yes. But it was an upward climb.

(After kissing her soundly)

T: (rising and taking Phaedra’s hand) Perhaps we can come back later. Say, an hour or so…

Q: But we have just started…

T: (leaving the stage) An hour… maybe two.

Q: Alright. There you have it. Good thing I read the book… Thanks you all for coming!

The Centurion & The Celt, a historical romance set in 60AD Roman Britannia, will be released with Resplendence Publishing in the spring of 2008. In addition to her novels, Ms. Meador has a feature in the Cup of Comfort for Single Moms coming out in March of 2008.
