Where characters come from and how do they form? Not as straight forward a question as it may seem, because if you asked 100 authors you’d get a 100 different answers. There may be a thread of similarity weaving through their answers, but not one of those authors would offer the same explanation. My characters usually turn up when I am doing something completely unrelated to writing. I often wonder, whether like actors, they wait in the wings of my subconscious until they ‘hear’ their cue.
