SPOTLIGHT! THE GASQUET PRINCES!

Please Welcome Author SHERRY GLOAG
to Books Read 'N' Makeup Done

Thank you for inviting me to visit with you today, and I hope I can answer your query about how my characters evolve.

Where characters come from and how do they form? Not as straight forward a question as it may seem, because if you asked 100 authors you’d get a 100 different answers. There may be a thread of similarity weaving through their answers, but not one of those authors would offer the same explanation.

My characters usually turn up when I am doing something completely unrelated to writing. I often wonder, whether like actors, they wait in the wings of my subconscious until they ‘hear’ their cue.

Take Melanie in From Now Until Forever. I was busy minding my own business when she turned up and ‘showed’ me the scene of Liam being shot at. The settings, the smells, the sounds were all in vibrant colour and sound. His cussing (which had to be toned down for my publisher – LOL) equalled the indignant screeching from the birds at having their serenity shattered. I could ‘see’ the sunlight glinting on Liam’s golden hair.

So then I had to find out who Melanie was, what she was doing there and why she opened contact with that scene. From there I had to find out why someone would shoot at Liam, who were they, and more importantly, who was Liam?

Without giving away too much information, I can tell you Melanie is Liam’s bodyguard. But she is also a whole lot more; and it’s that ‘more’ that creates a lot of the secondary and romantic suspense in From Now Until Forever.

So who is Liam? Why does he need a bodyguard? Because he’s a prince. A prince with attitude and beliefs he is convinced are right. But that doesn’t explain why someone is taking a pot-shot at him, does it? After all, when you think about it, there’s a whole bunch of princes kicking around the world today and no one’s taking pot-shots at them, are they?

Now I have to find out who the ‘bad guy is, and whether there’s more than one of them. Having done that I have to work out what is behind their attacks on Liam. It’s not easy if, like me, you don’t plot these things before you start writing. The relationship between the ‘bad-guys’ shifted and twisted in several directions before it finally evolved into the one that runs through From Now Until Forever.

Not until I read my first ever review for a different romance I considered myself a writer of contemporary romances. I had no idea I added in suspense. Tension, yes, black moments, of course, but suspense, ‘scuse me, where did that come from? But From Now Until Forever zipped from one suspenseful moment to another so fast, at times I could hardly keep up.

Nor did I realize From Now Until forever was going to be the first in a four-book series about the Gasquet Princes, so when Liam’s oldest brother, and heir to their father’s throne, Henri, demanded he have his own story, His Chosen Bride, I didn’t even know I’d already met his eventual bride.

Monica, is the antithesis of Melanie. Where Melanie is a do it now lady and on top of her security job, Monica has baggage so heavy she can hardly lift it. But she has something else that, from her point of view, complicates her life much more. She has a Gift she considers acurse more often than not, especially as several potential boyfriends have walked away from her when they discover more about it. Until now, those defections have upset her but not felled her. With Henri, Monica knows everything has changed. For her ‘he’s the one’ regardless of his status and the difference in their family backgrounds. She doesn’t expect anything more from Henri than… well maybe much more than she’s admitting to herself, but if he ridicules her Gift she knows it will devastate her.

As for Henri, how could I take him out of, what is for him, his safe and comfortable environment and shake him out of his acquiescence of his circumstances? By getting his father to kick Henri out of the palace! I had the king, ban Henri from participating in anything to do with his royal duties and functions— not just for a day, a week, but several months. Think of taking a city-slicker and dumping them on a deserted island… see what I mean?

Unlike From Now Until Forever, His Chosen Bride has no chases, no shooting, instead it has a great deal of personal tension for both Monica and Henri. They are robbed of their personal convictions and made to see their worlds from new perspectives. Instead of people taking pot shots at the hero and heroine, in His Chosen bride passion rules, but will it win out in the end or will it rob Monica and Henri of their chance to find their destiny?

Author Bio:

Multi-published author, Sherry Gloag is a transplanted Scot now living in the beautiful coastal countryside of Norfolk, England. She considers the surrounding countryside as extension of her own garden, to which she escapes when she needs "thinking time" and solitude to work out the plots for her next novel. While out walking she enjoys talking to her characters, as long as there are no other walkers close by.

Apart from writing, Sherry enjoys gardening, walking, reading and cheerfully admits her books tend to take over most of the shelf and floor space in her workroom-cum-office. She also finds crystal craft work therapeutic.

EXCERPT: “From Now Until Forever”:

“And now, my sweet wife, it is time for me to go.”

Emotions churned in his chest. Love, betrayal, grief for the loss of a lifestyle he’d come to love.

“And where do you think you are going?”

The sharpness of her voice sliced through his mourning.

“It is better for you not to know.”

“And why is that?” The full weight of an Arctic freeze laced her voice.

“It’s better I go alone.” How could he reveal the reasons?

Her gaze, as cold as a glacier, challenged him to continue, and when he didn’t she thumped his chest with her fist.

“Nothing to say?” she jibed. “Well, you listen to me.”

Before he guessed her intention, she shoved him away.

“You’re right. You have to leave today, but you’re not going alone.”
