I'd like to Welcome Liz Schulte to Books Read 'N' Makeup Done
Thanks for visiting us!

Liz Schulte:

Thank you so much for having me on Books ‘n Makeup! I am so excited to be here as a stop on my Dark Corners blog tour. I wasn’t entirely certain what to post about and as I was about to go to bed when an idea hit me. One of the questions I am asked most with regard to my book is “Where do you come up with your ideas?” The general answer I give is they are part reality and part imagination, which is true, but that can be expanded on.
So if you don’t mind I would like to talk about what inspires me in my day to day life. Dark Corners is a mystery/suspense novel, but my life is neither mysterious nor suspenseful—well at least not 99% of the time and that stray one percent is mostly likely a misunderstanding. Yet, I did draw from my real life while creating the story. Pieces of me, my friends, my family, and complete strangers go into every one of my characters.
No one character is any particular person, but they end up being a collage of attributes both real and imagined that hopefully leave me with flawed, well-rounded characters. I have one of those faces that people always seem to recognize, though I am fairly certain I do not know them. It has always been a common occurrence for complete strangers to come up to me and start telling me intimate details of their life.
Back when I was determined to be a lawyer this could be awkward, but now that I am writing I am more open to conversations. The most important thing to do is listen. I really listen to the stories people tell me, the emotions they display, and I ask questions trying to better understand where someone is coming from. I consider being an author an extension of psychology. We study human behavior in all of its nuances to better create characters who live in a world as three dimensional as our own.
So that is mostly where the reality comes into my stories. It’s in the interactions, the stray bits of dialogue that stay with me, and the mannerisms people use every day. However, one of Ella’s ghostly experiences did happen to me and despite my best efforts I never could Scooby Doo that mystery in my real life so I gave it an ending on paper. I guess inspiration can be found in everything we encounter and everything we do, no matter mundane it may seem to you when it happens, with a little bit of imagination it can create a whole world.

Ella Reynolds knew from the first moment she walked into the old house someone or something was watching her. Waiting. Her husband's violent murder sent her spiraling into a world of grief and isolation, but Ella isn't alone. Who or what is responsible for her husband's death is still with her. Darkness has engulfed the past year of Ella's life. Everyday reality slips a little more between her fingers as she struggles to break free from her memories.

She must look deeper into her past as well as the present to discover truth of her husband's homicide. A string of uncanny events takes place and practical explanations run thin as Ella follows the terrifying road to closure. As the past and present come to a head, Ella must decipher who or what the murderer is before it takes her as well.
